The ingestion of calcium provided in the food depends upon the form in which the calcium is incorporated in the food. If the calcium is not provided in sufficiency by the diet, the body will draw the calcium it needs from the bones, which are fragile.

The addition of vitamin D3 stimulates the assimilation of calcium in the gastro-intestinal tract and its incorporation in the skeleton and egg shells. Vitamin D3 is partially provided by the diet and partly synthesized in the skin under the influence of the sun's UV rays.
